Wenneker Distilleries is based in Roosendaal and gives 1693 as its starting year. The house makes a broad range of liqueurs and spirits, many of them for the hospitality trade and for export.
The name Denim comes from the story the brand tells about it: grandfather Van der Tuijn's gin recipe was supposedly found in an old pair of jeans. Whether it literally happened that way, the house leaves open; the label does refer to it.
The recipe contains eight botanicals: juniper, orris root, coriander, angelica root, cardamom, lemon peel, rosemary and fig.
A gin recipe that, according to the house, was found in an old pair of jeans.
Rosemary and fig in a gin
Rosemary and fig are not standard botanicals in a dry gin. Rosemary pulls the whole towards the herbal side, fig gives a softer, fuller undertone.
That makes this a bottle that shows itself better in a gin and tonic with a neutral tonic than with a tonic that already brings a lot of flavour of its own.
