What is korenwijn?

Korenwijn is the heaviest kind in the family: at least fifty-one percent malt wine, against much less in an ordinary oude jenever. That is why you clearly taste the grain, with a full, round mouthfeel that is more reminiscent of whisky than of gin.
Many korenwijns also mature in oak casks, which brings vanilla and woody spice. That makes it a drink above all to serve neat, in a tulip glass, at room temperature or lightly chilled.
For anyone who drinks whisky but has never tried jenever, korenwijn is the logical way in.
Korenwijn contains at least 51 percent malt wine. You taste that straight away: plenty of grain, little sharpness.

What is the difference between jonge and old jenever?
That is not about age but about the recipe. Oude jenever has more malt wine and is fuller and grainier; jonge jenever has a more neutral base and is lighter and drier.
How do you serve jenever?
At cellar temperature in a tulip glass rather than ice-cold from a traditional jenever shot glass. Then you taste the grain and the botanicals.
