Why here

Two names on one label

The bottle’s full name is Absinthe un Peureux by Massenez. That is two houses on one label, and it regularly causes confusion.

Un Peureux is the old absinthe brand of Grandes Distilleries Peureux, a distillery in Fougerolles in the Haute-Saône, at the foot of the Vosges. The house has existed since 1864 and grew large with fruit distillates and fruit in alcohol.

Massenez is a distillery in Dieffenbach-au-Val in Alsace. Peureux took over that company in 2011. Since then you find both names on the same bottles.

Besides this absinthe, our online shop also has a Massenez Kirsch Vieux, among the eaux-de-vie.

Where the colour comes from

The producer calls the color feuille morte, the color of a dry leaf. According to him it comes from herbs that release color after distillation, not from coloring.

Grandes Distilleries Peureux has been in Fougerolles, in the Haute-Saône, since 1864. The house calls itself the world's largest producer of fruit eaux-de-vie and market leader in the maceration of fruit.

The best-known product is the Griottines: cherries in a kirsch-flavoured liqueur of fifteen percent. That brand name was registered in 1980.

The absinthe Un Peureux is an old brand of the house that was re-released when the distillery turned one hundred and fifty years old.

The herbs are steeped and distilled in small quantities.
