Why here

Kirsch from Alsace

Kirsch is a spirit distilled from fermented cherries. No sugar is added and there is no ageing in wood, so the spirit stays clear and dry. Alsace, together with the Black Forest and Switzerland, is the region where this style belongs.

This bottle is called Kirsch Vieux. Massenez also makes other kirsch bottlings; this is the one we stock.

Massenez is an established name in the world of eau de vie. The house was at the origin of distilling wild raspberry, one of the most difficult fruits to work with.

What is kirsch?

Kirsch, in full Kirschwasser, is a distillate of fermented cherries. Nothing is added: no sugar, no wood, no colouring. In the kitchen, kirsch is a fixed part of Black Forest gateau and of cheese fondue; neat, it is served cool in a small glass.

About the brand

Four generations in the Val de Villé

  • The house in brief
  • 1870Jean-Baptiste Massenez starts as a distiller in Urbeis.

  • FourThe number of generations of Massenez in the company.
  • 2010Collaboration with Grandes Distilleries Peureux.

Jean-Baptiste Massenez worked as a distiller in Urbeis, in the Val de Villé in Alsace, and started there on his own in 1870. After him came Eugène, Gabriel Eugène and finally Manou and Dominique Massenez: four generations.

Eugène Massenez began distilling wild raspberry in 1913. That eau de vie made the name of the house; according to Massenez, the company became a purveyor to the court after the Queen of Sweden became a regular customer during her visits to Alsace.

Since 2010 Massenez has worked together with Grandes Distilleries Peureux. The Alsatian distillery is run together with Manou Massenez.

Why is berry eau de vie so expensive?

During distillation, the sugar in the fruit is converted into alcohol. Raspberries and other berries contain little sugar and are small and fragile, so a lot of fruit is needed for one bottle. With cherries it is more favourable, but there too: the less sugar in the fruit, the more fruit per bottle.

Which bottle

Who is this bottle for?

If you only know kirsch from the kitchen and would like to taste what an Alsace distillery makes of it, this is a good step. Massenez is a name you cannot ignore in this category.

If you want to serve the kirsch neat, do so chilled and in a small glass; that is how it is served in Alsace.
