Chapter 01 · What you taste

Already mixed, but not all equally light

Een kant-en-klare cocktail is gedistilleerd of wijn dat al met de mixdrank is samengevoegd. Er zijn twee families: het blikje, zoals hard seltzer, iced tea en frisdrank met wodka, laag in alcohol en koud te drinken; en de fles om zelf uit te schenken, zoals mojito, spritz en old fashioned, die een stuk hoger zitten. Chapter 02 · The can

The can is measured out in advance

The can or small bottle is the corner of hard seltzer and iced tea. Hard seltzer is sparkling water with a neutral alcohol base and a little flavour, usually low in alcohol and sugar; iced tea with vodka is sweeter. The amount per serving is fixed, with no glassware or mixer needed. Keep chilled and drink cold.

Chapter 03 · The bottle

The bottle you pour from yourself

The seventy-centilitre bottle contains a cocktail that is already mixed but still needs to be poured, over ice and optionally with sparkling water. It contains the full spirit base, so the percentage is closer to spirits than to a can. Follow the serving ratio on the label. Keep sweet mixes chilled after opening.

Chapter 04 · Netherlands

The Netherlands and Belgium go different ways

The market for ready-made cocktails has grown quickly in the Netherlands and Belgium, with producers adding a range of cans to their regular line-up. In the Netherlands the emphasis is on seltzers and iced teas: dry, light and based on sparkling water. The Belgian corner is sweeter and more colourful, closer to liqueur than to a long drink.

A good cocktail calls for several bottles, fresh juice and a bit of technique. For an impromptu get-together, a small group or an evening on the terrace, that is often more work than it is worth. That is when a bottle with everything already mixed is simply practical.

It saves the most with drinks that have lots of ingredients, such as an espresso martini or a pornstar martini. Chill, pour, done.
