More than a bottle of bitters
Everyone knows the little bottle with the oversized label. Less well known is that the same house also makes rum on Trinidad, and that it is the only distillery the island still has.
The bitters came first: they were devised in 1824 by a German army doctor in Venezuela. The company moved to Trinidad in the 1870s; its own rum distillery was added in 1949.

- The house in brief
- 1824The bitters are devised, in Venezuela.
- 1875The company moves to Trinidad.
- 1949Trinidad Distillers is going to make rum.
- 1973A French Savalle still is added.
The rum is made by Trinidad Distillers in Laventille near Port of Spain. Distillation is done on molasses from local cane, with both pot stills and columns, including a French Savalle still that was added in 1973.
Trinidad once had several distilleries. The best known, Caroni, closed in 2002. Angostura is the only one still there.
Bitters and rum come from the same house. In the early years the company bought in rum as a base for the bitters and sold the rest under its own name; later it became a full-fledged rum producer itself.

Where best to start
The 7-year-old is the starting point: enough maturation to drink neat and widely usable in cocktails.
The 1919 is the classic of the house and the bottle most people know it by.
The Tamboo is spiced, so made with spices; it points towards cola and ginger beer.
