Cachaça is not rum, but the difference is small
Cachaça is made in Brazil from freshly pressed sugar cane juice. Rum is usually made from molasses, the syrupy by-product of sugar refining. That one step of difference produces a very different flavour profile: fresher, grassier, less caramel.
Velho Barreiro is one of the best-known cachaças. It comes in a one-litre bottle, which is handy if you make caipirinha more often, and that is what this bottle is made for.

The caipirinha is the best-known use: cachaça, lime, sugar and crushed ice, nothing more. Precisely because there is so little in it, the cachaça comes through well.

Also on our shelf: the Cachaça 51, another well-known Brazilian name.
Fresh cane juice instead of molasses: that is the whole difference.
