The bottle behind the caipirinha
Cachaça is made from freshly pressed sugarcane juice and may only be called that if it comes from Brazil. Number 51 is the best-known brand; in Brazil it is found in almost every bar.
You need it for a caipirinha: lime, cane sugar, crushed ice and cachaça. That is all there is to it.

How do you make a caipirinha?
Half a lime in wedges, two spoonfuls of cane sugar, press briefly in the glass. Do not crush it finely, as the peel will turn bitter. Add crushed ice and pour the cachaça over it. Stir and done.

Cachaça is a category of its own with its own Brazilian rules: fresh cane juice as the raw material, between 38 and 48 percent, and made exclusively in Brazil. Technically it resembles rhum agricole, but legally it is something different.
It is drunk in enormous quantities in Brazil: after beer, it is the most consumed alcoholic drink in the country.
We also carry Ypióca and Velho Barreiro; those three side by side give a nice picture of what cachaça can be.
Cachaça may only be called that if it comes from Brazil.
What this bottle goes with
In a caipirinha, and also in almost any cocktail where you would normally use white rum.
Serving it neat is common in Brazil, but people usually choose an aged cachaça for that.
