From the shelf

The bottle

Aberlour is in Speyside. This bottling is twelve years old, is not chill-filtered and is bottled at 48 percent ABV. The colour is full gold. The nose brings powerful sherry aromas with orange cake, figs and honey; on the palate full sweet tones of honey with spiciness alongside, and a long, slightly drying finish with chocolate and quinces.

The combination

Why this works together

At 135 mm the Edmundo is shorter than a corona but clearly thicker, so the smoke comes in full without it taking long. Montecristo is known for cocoa and a light pepper. That cocoa lies close to the chocolate tone in the finish, while the pepper counterbalances the sherry sweetness. The 48 percent by volume keeps the whisky upright next to the weight of the cigar.

Beside the glass

The cigar

We do not sell cigars; we supply the whisky. These cigars go well alongside this bottle.

This is what the size of the Montecristo Edmundo looks like: robusto extra format, 135 mm, as thick as a robusto and a good deal longer. This is our own drawing in our house style, not a photo from the brand; we do not sell cigars.

  • Montecristo Edmundo Cuban robusto extra of 135 mm with cocoa and light pepper, running parallel to the chocolate in the finish.
  • H. Upmann Magnum 46 Corona gorda of 143 mm, slimmer and drier, so the sherry sweetness stands out more.
  • Ashton Aged Maduro No. 20 Dark broadleaf wrapper with coffee and sweet wood, close to the tone of the sherry cask.
  • Rocky Patel Vintage 1992 Ecuadorian Sumatra wrapper, lighter in colour and drier, as a counterweight to the sweetness.

In the glass

Serving

Neat in a tulip-shaped glass. At 48 percent by volume, a few drops of water bring out the dried fruit. Taste first without smoke and then drink between puffs.
