The Balvenie 12 Years Old Doublewood alongside Montecristo No. 4
A Speyside malt from two casks beside the best-known Cuban petit corona. Two mid-weights that balance each other out.

From the shelf
The bottle
Balvenie is in Dufftown in Speyside and has its own maltings. This twelve-year-old first matured on American oak and then on oloroso casks, and is at 40 percent ABV. In the glass honey and vanilla, with nut, cinnamon and a thin layer of sherry; the finish is soft and smooth.

The combination
Why this works together
The No. 4 sits in the middle of the strength range and brings cocoa, wood and a light pepper. The cinnamon and nut from the second cask run parallel to that, while the sweetness from that same cask catches the pepper of the wrapper. At 40 percent ABV the alcohol does not push, so the cigar stays in charge.
Beside the glass
The cigar
We do not sell cigars; we supply the whisky. These cigars go well alongside this bottle.

- Montecristo No. 4 Cuban petit corona of 129 mm, medium in strength; for many smokers the benchmark of this size.
- Romeo y Julieta No. 2 Similar size and weight, with a more floral character alongside the sherry sweetness.
- H. Upmann Magnum 46 A little thicker and therefore rounder in smoke, with the same restrained house style.
- Juan Lopez Selección No. 2 A robusto of medium strength, for those who want to sit longer without moving up to a full-bodied cigar.
In the glass
Serving
Neat in a tulip-shaped glass. At 40 percent alcohol by volume water is unnecessary and in fact dilutes the cinnamon away. Place the glass on the side the smoke does not drift past and drink between puffs.
