Nikka from the Barrel alongside Oliva Serie V Melanio
A Japanese whisky at high strength alongside a full-bodied Nicaraguan robusto. Here the alcohol itself is the thing to watch.

From the shelf
The bottle
Nikka from the Barrel comes from Japan and is bottled at 51.4 percent ABV, in a 50 centilitre bottle. After blending it matures for a further period in cask before going into the bottle. That gives a dense, woody whisky with vanilla and dried fruit, and a clear alcohol bite.
The combination
Why this works together
The Serie V Melanio is full, with pepper, cocoa and a dark woody note. The whisky can stand up to that strength, but 51.4% ABV is an axis of its own, apart from flavour: high alcohol makes the mouth sharp and makes the smoke taste flat afterwards. A few drops of water set that right without the whisky losing weight.
Beside the glass
The cigar
We do not sell cigars; we supply the whisky. These cigars go well alongside this bottle.

- Oliva Serie V Melanio Nicaraguan robusto of full body under an Ecuadorian Sumatra wrapper; dark and sweet in tone.
- Oliva Serie V The same line without the Sumatra wrapper: drier and more peppery, and somewhat cheaper to find.
- My Father Le Bijou 1922 Full and peppery; holds its own against a cask strength whisky.
- Plasencia Alma Fuerte Full-bodied Nicaraguan puro with an earthy, woody structure.
In the glass
Serving
Neat or with half a teaspoon of water, in a tulip-shaped glass. Of the three axes (smoke, cask and alcohol), alcohol is the only one here that you can still adjust; do that before you begin. Drink in the pauses between puffs.
