Wild Turkey 101 alongside My Father Le Bijou 1922 Petit Robusto
A bourbon at 50.5 percent by volume alongside a short, heavy Nicaraguan cigar. Two parties that both sit on the sturdy side.

From the shelf
The bottle
Wild Turkey 101 is a bourbon from Kentucky, in the United States, at 50.5 percent ABV. The colour is amber. The nose brings cinnamon, vanilla and oak; in the mouth vanilla, caramel and more cinnamon, with intense oak aromas and a touch of pepper. The finish is drying, with the spiciness of oak.
The combination
Why this works together
A petit robusto is short and thick: a lot of smoke in little time, so the cigar shows its full tone straight away instead of building up gradually. My Father works with Nicaraguan tobacco and a dark wrapper, which gives black pepper and sweet wood. At 50.5 percent by volume this bourbon has enough alcohol to answer that pepper; with a lighter bottle this would be too much.
Beside the glass
The cigar
We do not sell cigars; we supply the whisky. These cigars go well alongside this bottle.

- My Father Le Bijou 1922 Petit Robusto Nicaraguan petit robusto, short and heavy, that can stand up to 50.5 percent alcohol by volume.
- Oliva Serie V Double Robusto Robusto of 124 mm, just as full but longer, for those who have more time.
- Joya de Nicaragua Antaño 1970 Robusto Grande Nicaraguan and emphatically peppery, in the same order of weight.
- Rocky Patel Sungrown Robusto Slightly lighter in tone, which gives the caramel in the bourbon more room.
In the glass
Serving
Neat in a tulip-shaped glass. At 50.5 percent ABV this bourbon is robust; a few drops of water bring out the caramel and make the oak less sharp. Drink it in the pauses between puffs.
