Why here

Vieux from Groningen, with grape distillate

Vieux is a Dutch spirit that came about as a substitute for cognac. At the end of the nineteenth century, Dutch distillers made their own cognac from neutral grain or molasses alcohol with water, caramel and flavourings. The bottle said Hollandse cognac; in the pub it was called a koetsiertje.

The Wine Decree of 1959 (Wijnbesluit) reserved the name cognac for eau-de-vie from the French Charente. The distillers were given two years, and from 1 September 1961 the bottle said vieux (French for old), a word that already appeared on Dutch labels as a quality designation.

Hooghoudt says something about this bottle that you do not often read within its category: it is made with grape distillate aged on oak. We have one of them in stock, the litre.

About the house

  • 1888Hero Jan and Grietje Hooghoudt start in a cellar on the Oosterstraat in Groningen.
  • 1920De Oude Klare, the house’s first jenever.
  • 1968De Jonge Dubbele Graanjenever, and the first television commercial of a Dutch distillery.
  • 1988The royal warrant.

Hooghoudt started in 1888. Hero Jan and Grietje Hooghoudt made liqueurs and regional drinks in a cellar on the Oosterstraat in Groningen. A year later the company moved to the Grote Kromme Elleboog.

Then it passed through the family: the second generation took over in 1926, the third in 1958, the fourth in 1994. By now the fifth generation is at the helm. In 1920 came the Oude Klare, the first jenever; in 1968 followed the Jonge Dubbele Graanjenever, with which Hooghoudt became the first Dutch distillery to advertise on television.

In 1988, exactly one hundred years after its start, the company received the royal warrant as purveyor to the court. Besides jenever, Hooghoudt now makes liqueurs, syrups, herbal bitters and whisky, and this vieux.
