Why here

The lemon brandy without fuss

We stock Floryn with one bottle in the fruit spirits section: the lemon brandy in the litre bottle, twenty percent according to the label. That puts it exactly at the strength that is usual for this type.

Anyone who knows citroenbrandewijn usually knows it from home: a bottle that sits in the fridge and from which a small glass is poured now and then. Anyone who does not know it often buys it because someone else asked for it.

If you would like to know how this one compares with the other lemon brandies we stock, call 0570 541 278. We have several standing side by side.

About the type

What lemon brandy actually is

  • The type in brief
  • NetherlandsLemon brandy is a typically Dutch drink.
  • Lemon peelThe flavour carrier, together with herbs.
  • CaramelSometimes added for colour and a fuller taste.
  • 20%The strength that is usual for this type.

Citroenbrandewijn is a Dutch drink that you will hardly come across outside our language area. Herbs and lemon peels are added to the distillate. Sometimes caramel is added, which gives the drink a darker colour and a fuller taste. The alcohol content is around twenty percent.

It resembles lemon genever, but is sweeter. It is sometimes compared with Italian limoncello, which is stronger, between twenty-five and thirty-six percent.

Floryn or Florijn?

The bottle says Floryn. In product descriptions, including in our own webshop, you will come across the spelling Florijn. It is the same brand; the two spellings are used interchangeably.

We stock several lemon brandies side by side, from different houses and in different strengths. Anyone used to a particular bottle at home can place it next to another one here and read the difference on the label.

Blackcurrant jenever, lemon brandy or fruit liqueur?

Three different things are mixed together on this shelf. It helps to know which is which.

Blackcurrant jenever is jenever in which blackcurrants have steeped, sometimes with raspberries, and usually sweetened with sugar. The colour is wine red and the alcohol content is at least twenty per cent.

Citroenbrandewijn is a sweetened distillate with herbs and lemon peel in it, sometimes with caramel for colour and body. It is around twenty percent and is sweeter than lemon jenever.

Lemon jenever is the older of the two: lemons with jenever and sugar, a preparation that takes about thirty days. It is usually sturdier than lemon brandy.

A fruit liqueur is a liqueur based on fruit. Every liqueur must have at least fifteen per cent alcohol and at least a hundred grams of sugar per litre. If a product stays below fifteen per cent, it is no longer called a liqueur but a likorette.

The Floryn is the second kind: a lemon brandy of twenty percent.

Fruit in the name does not make it a healthy product; it is still alcohol.
