Chapter 01 · What it is

Fruit on a spirit base

Vruchtendrank is fruit juice or extract on brandy or jenever, usually between fifteen and thirty percent. It is not a fruit liqueur: liqueur must meet a minimum sugar content and is usually higher in alcohol. Vruchtendrank is a Dutch shelf name, the bottle that comes to the table in many homes when guests visit. Store cool and dark.

Chapter 02 · Berries

Berries: sweet with a tart edge

Berry drink, from wild berry, elderberry or redcurrant, is the best known. Juice and sugar are added to a clear brandy; the colour is deep and the taste sweet with a tart edge. Classically drunk neat and at room temperature, in a small glass. Cold it is fresher, and with sparkling water or tonic it becomes a long summer drink.

Chapter 03 · Lemon

Lemon brandy, the other side

Citroenbrandewijn is lighter in colour, sharper in acidity and less sweet. The lemon peel is steeped in brandy, because the aroma is in the peel and not in the juice: it smells of lemon without tasting like lemonade. Good with water or tonic, or over ice in summer. Blackberries and cherries belong in the same corner.

Chapter 04 · Strength

Why this group is so close together

Fruit drinks are close together in strength, between twenty and thirty per cent. Alcohol and sugar keep the drink stable, but above thirty per cent the alcohol drowns out the fruit. The difference between bottles therefore lies mainly in the fruit, the sweetness and the size.

Chapter 05 · Size

The litre bottle is the standard size here

Like vieux, vruchtendrank is sold more often by the litre than by the half litre: a bottle that sits in the cupboard for months, with a small glass when guests come round. Want to try it first? The half litre is there for that. An opened bottle keeps for a long time, provided it is kept cool and out of the light; otherwise aroma and colour fade.

Why here

Vruchtendrank on the Brink

Vruchtendrank is the Dutch fruit drink for the borrel: berries, lemon, orange or cherry, on jenever or neutral spirit, and lower in alcohol than spirits.

Almost everything comes from the Netherlands: the names that stood in the drinks cabinet for generations.

Bessenjenever is the best known: the glass after work or after church. Those bottles still go over the counter, to people who know exactly what they want.

Because the percentage is lower than for jenever or liqueur, vruchtendrank has its own shelf. That way nobody goes home with the wrong bottle.

The names that stood in the drinks cabinet for generations are still here.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference from jenever?

Fruit drink is steeped on fruit and has a lower alcohol percentage. Jenever is a grain distillate with juniper berries. The percentage is listed for each bottle in the list.

Does an opened bottle need to go in the fridge?

At this strength that is not necessary, but serving it chilled is common. Follow what is on the label.
