Why here

What is and is not established

Aberdour Piper is a brand name, not a distillery. There is no distillery in Scotland called Aberdour. Who owns the brand cannot be established with certainty: it is associated with an English drinks company, but that company no longer lists it among its own brands. We therefore stick to what is certain.

And that is this: it is Scotch, so everything in the bottle has spent at least three years in oak casks, and the blend goes into the bottle at forty percent. Which distilleries the malt and grain come from is not disclosed.

About the name

A village in Fife, and nothing else

  • The brand in brief
  • BlendMalt and grain, origin unknown.
  • 40%The bottling strength.
  • 3 yearsThe legal minimum for Scotch.
  • AberdourA village in Fife, unrelated.

Aberdour is a village on the Firth of Forth in Fife. There is no demonstrable connection between that village and this whisky: no distillery, no historic distillery that bears the name, no family history. The name is on the bottle, nothing more.

That is more the rule than the exception with this kind of brand. A large share of the Scotch blends on the shelf come from brand owners who distil nothing themselves. They buy in malt and grain, have it blended and bottled, and put their own label on it.

It pays to know what is guaranteed then. Scotch is a protected designation: distilled and matured in Scotland, at least three years in oak casks of at most seven hundred litres, and at least forty percent in the bottle.

A brand name is not yet a distillery.
