Exactly the other way round
The blending industry went in one direction for a century: lighter, softer, more accessible, more grain whisky. Black Bull did the opposite. George Willsher registered the name in 1864 in Dundee and blended with a high malt share at a higher strength than was usual at the time.
When Euan Shand relaunched the brand in 2009, he kept to those principles: at least half malt whisky, and bottling at fifty percent without adding water to make it easier. You can tell: this is a blend with weight.

From the young entry-level bottle to an old vintage.
From cask trader to brand owner
- A brief history
- 1864The name Black Bull registered in Dundee.
- 1938Duncan Taylor founded in Glasgow.
- 2001Euan Shand buys the company and moves it to Huntly.
- 2009Black Bull relaunched.
Duncan Taylor began in 1938 in Glasgow as a cask dealer: buy, store, resell. Over the decades such firms built up a stock that nobody could get hold of later. In 2001 Euan Shand bought the company and moved it to his home town of Huntly in Aberdeenshire.
That explains why the old vintages of Black Bull are special. They contain whisky from distilleries that have since closed, without you paying the price of a single cask. The twenty-one-year-old and older go in that direction.
The youngest expression is called Kyloe, after an old breed of Scottish Highland cattle. That one too is bottled at fifty percent, like the rest of the range.
At least half malt, and fifty percent in the bottle.
What these bottles go with
Fifty percent sounds hefty, but it actually gives you room to decide for yourself how much water goes in. Start neat.
A good aged blend is often more interesting than a young single malt in the same price range. This range shows it.
