Why here

Whisky from a fifty-litre cask

The Octave series by Duncan Taylor revolves around small casks of about fifty litres. The smaller the cask, the more wood the whisky touches per litre, and so the faster the flavour changes. A few months in such an octave does more than a few years in an ordinary hogshead.

We have one of them, a fifteen-year-old Miltonduff, plus a Ben Nevis from 2012. Both from a single cask and at cask strength. Not sure which one you need? Just give us a call. That is what we are here for.

About the house

A stock that lay waiting for decades

  • The house in brief
  • 1938Founded as a trading house in Glasgow.
  • HuntlyNow based in Aberdeenshire.
  • OctaveSmall casks of around fifty litres for a quick finish.
  • AlwaysSingle cask, cask number on the label.

Duncan Taylor was founded in 1938 and grew into one of the bottlers with the largest own stock of old Scottish casks. The company is now based in Huntly in Aberdeenshire.

The best-known series is Octave: whisky that spends a final period in a small cask of roughly fifty litres. Such a small cask has proportionally much more wood surface than an ordinary hogshead of 250 litres, so the influence of the wood works much faster. It is a way of giving a cask a clear twist in a short time.

Small cask, fast influence. A few months in an octave does what years in an ordinary cask cannot manage.
