What can and cannot be said about it
Buffalo Trace is in Frankfort, Kentucky, on the Kentucky River, and is owned by Sazerac. Many claims circulate about the distillery. The best known is that it would be the oldest continuously operating distillery in America. That claim is disputed, and we therefore do not present it as fact.

Pappy Van Winkle is made there, but that brand is owned by the Van Winkle family. Blanton’s is made there too, but that brand belongs to Age International. Produced at the same address is therefore not the same as from the same house.
According to the distillery the name refers to the migration routes of bison. They led to fordable places in the river, and one of those routes ended at the spot where the distillery now stands.
