Why this bourbon is smoother
Almost every bourbon contains rye alongside corn. It gives the peppery, spicy side you find in many Kentucky whiskeys. Maker’s Mark left out that rye and uses soft red winter wheat. That makes the whole rounder, sweeter and less sharp.
Furthermore, bottling is done by taste rather than by age, the casks are moved by hand between the floors of the warehouse, and the spirit goes into the cask at a lower strength than usual. Every bottle is dipped by hand in red wax, which means no two bottles have the same drips.

Margie came up with the bottle, Bill with the recipe
- A brief history
- 1953Bill Samuels Sr. buys the distillery in Loretto.
- 1958The first dipped bottle.
- 2010Maker’s 46 is released.
- 2013The reduction in strength is reversed after protest.
Margie Samuels, the founder’s wife, came up with the name Maker’s Mark, designed the bottle and the label and devised the red wax dip. She has been inducted into the Kentucky Bourbon Hall of Fame. It is one of the few big whiskey brands whose logo was demonstrably designed by a woman.
The label says whisky without an e, whereas American whiskey is usually spelled with an e. According to the company, this is a tribute to the Scots-Irish origin of the family. There is no independent documentation of that motive, so we pass it on as their own explanation.
Bill’s Recipe No. 46, also known as the French Oaked, is not a different distillate but a finishing treatment: ten heavily charred French oak staves are hung in an emptied cask, after which fully matured Maker’s Mark matures further in it for weeks. The number forty-six refers to the stave profile from the test series, not to the alcohol percentage.
Not bottled by age, but by taste.
What these bottles go with
A good first bourbon for anyone who finds the peppery side of rye less pleasant. Neat, with an ice cube or in an Old Fashioned.
The litre bottle is handy when guests come over; the No. 46 is the bottle to pick if you want to notice the difference from the standard.
