Why here

A style that had disappeared

Before Prohibition, a good share of American rye whiskey came from Maryland. That style was then crushed, not because people disliked it but because the distilleries stood on expensive city land and were sold. Kentucky lay in the countryside and did survive.

Sagamore brought that style back. It started with rye distilled elsewhere to its own recipe and blended and bottled in Maryland; since 2017 it has had its own distillery on the waterfront in Baltimore. In May 2024 the first bottle made from start to finish in Maryland appeared. Note: this does not yet apply to the whole range.

About the method

Two mash bills, and wavy staves

  • The company in brief
  • BaltimoreWhere the distillery stands, on the waterfront.
  • 2017The own distillery opens, in April.
  • 2024The first bottle distilled entirely in Maryland.
  • Sagamore FarmWhere the spring water comes from.

Every bottle is a blend of two straight rye mash bills: one with a lot of rye and one with less. That interplay is the signature of the house. It is distilled three times, in a tall copper column with a small pot still alongside for experiments.

The water comes from a limestone-filtered spring on Sagamore Farm in Reisterstown, from a spring house dating from 1909, and is brought by tanker over more than thirty kilometres. The farm was once a well-known horse stud and nowadays also supplies grain.

After four to five years in heavily charred new oak, the Double Oak spends another eighteen months in casks with wavy staves. That profile increases the contact surface with the wood. The Cask Strength goes into the bottle virtually undiluted.

A style that did not disappear because it was no good, but because the land became too expensive.

Practical

What these bottles go with

Rye whiskey is spicier and drier than bourbon and works excellently in a Manhattan or an Old Fashioned.

Next to the standard bottle, the Double Oak and the Cask Strength clearly show what wood and strength do.

Frequently asked questions about Sagamore

How much Sagamore does ’t Bockje have in stock?

Three bottles.

Where does Sagamore come from?

From Baltimore in Maryland. Its own distillery on the waterfront opened in April 2017.

Is this their own distillate?

Partly. The brand started with rye distilled elsewhere to its own recipe. In May 2024 the first bottle made entirely in Maryland appeared; the changeover is happening expression by expression.

What is Maryland rye?

A historic style from the Chesapeake Bay area: plenty of rye, with enough maize added to make it rounder. It is not a legally protected designation.

What is Double Oak?

Rye that, after four to five years in heavily charred new oak, spends another eighteen months in casks with wavy staves, giving more wood contact.
