Why here

Barley from its own land, water from its own spring

BUS is made at the family business De Heische Hoeve in Loosbroek, municipality of Bernheze, by Dennis Hurkmans and Ezra Leeger. The name refers to the hamlet of Bus near Nistelrode and to the water spring on the farmyard.

It is single estate: the brewing barley grows on its own land next to the distillery and has been SKAL organic since 2025. The process water comes from a point source fed by the Peelrandbreuk: wijstwater. Malting is outsourced.

About the brand

About BUS Whisky

BUS Whisky is made on a farm in the Brabant hamlet of Bus, near Loosbroek. Dennis Hurkmans and Ezra Leeger began distilling whisky there in 2015 from brewing barley grown on their own fields. The whisky came onto the market at the end of 2019.

The entire process stays in-house, from growing the grain to bottling. The water comes from an upwelling groundwater spring (wijst) on the farmstead, a phenomenon linked to the Peel Boundary Fault that shapes the landscape here.

The brand positions itself emphatically as a maker of sustainable whisky. The distillery runs on solar panels, biomass and heat recovery, and the bottles are made of recycled glass. In 2025 BUS became the first Dutch whisky producer to obtain B Corp certification.

The range consists of single malt and single cask whisky, mostly matured in first fill bourbon and sherry casks. The whisky is not chill-filtered. Tours are also given on site.

About the company

More than a distillery

  • The company in brief
  • LoosbroekMunicipality of Bernheze, Noord-Brabant.
  • Single estateBarley from its own land.
  • WijstwaterFrom a spring on the property.
  • B CorpCertified since April 2025.

In April 2025 BUS became B Corp certified with a score of 89,2, where the threshold is 80. According to B Lab, that makes it the first whisky producer in the Netherlands with that certification and the tenth in the world.

Maturation takes place in oak casks, mostly first-fill bourbon and sherry. The standard single malt is composed of four first-fill bourbon casks. The Master Distiller Edition comes from a series of four sherry quarter casks: amontillado, moscatel, oloroso and PX.

The company is broader than just the distillery: there is a hotel, a restaurant, tours are given and there is a cask programme.

The barley grows next to the still, the water comes from the ground beneath it.
