Why here

Seventeen releases outside the regular range

Alongside five fixed bottles, Compass Box constantly releases limited editions, and those are gone after a while. We have seventeen of them: from Nectarosity at 57 euro to Ultramarine at 380, and two bottles from the quartet with which the house imitated vanished nineteenth-century blends.

It is also special that we have three vintages of Hedonism side by side: 2024, 2025 and 2026. This is the bottle the house started with in 2000, made entirely from grain whisky, something nobody did at the time. Not sure which one to choose? Give us a call. That's what we're here for.

The core range

The five bottles that are always there

From the fruity Orchard House to the smoky Peat Monster.

About the house

Rapped on the knuckles twice, carried on twice

  • The house in five moments
  • 2000John Glaser starts Compass Box in London; Hedonism is the first bottle.
  • 2004The Peat Monster is released and becomes the bestseller.
  • 2005The Spice Tree is banned because of the casks used.
  • 2016The transparency campaign begins after a new conflict with the SWA.
  • 2024Glaser hands the blending over to James Saxon.

John Glaser was marketing director at Johnnie Walker when he decided that blends could be taken just as seriously as single malt. In 2000 he started Compass Box in London, with an approach borrowed from the wine world: choosing casks on taste, not on name.

The first bottle was Hedonism, entirely grain whisky. Grain was then seen as the cheap filler of a blend; Glaser bottled it as a finished product. Four years later came The Peat Monster, which became the bestseller.

Twice the house clashed with the Scotch Whisky Association. In 2005 over The Spice Tree, for which extra oak staves had been hung in the cask. That was not allowed, and the bottle returned with heavily toasted cask heads instead. And in 2016 because Compass Box said exactly how old each component of a blend was; that, too, was formally not allowed. The response was a campaign for more openness, which Bruichladdich, among others, joined.

On the label of a blend only the age of the youngest whisky may be stated. Compass Box thought that was too little information and published the rest anyway.

Blended malt, blended grain or blend?

Compass Box makes all three. A blended malt is a composition of single malts without grain whisky. That is how Peat Monster, Spice Tree and Orchard House are made. A blended grain consists solely of grain whisky: that is Hedonism. And an ordinary blend combines both. There is no quality difference in the category; what matters is what the maker does with it.

The smoky side

Five bottles around peated malt, with the Peat Monster at cask strength as the strongest.

Frequently asked questions about Compass Box

How much Compass Box does ’t Bockje have in stock?

Twenty-seven bottles, all available immediately. The Peat Monster Arcana is temporarily sold out.

Is Compass Box a distillery?

No. It is a blending house in London that buys casks from Scottish distilleries and composes them into its own bottles. The whisky therefore comes from Scotland; the blending happens at Compass Box.

Which Compass Box should you try first?

Orchard House if you want fruity, The Peat Monster if you want smoke. Both are under sixty euros and show well what this house does.

Why was The Spice Tree once banned?

Because extra oak staves had been hung in the cask to get more wood influence. That fell outside the rules of the Scotch Whisky Association. The bottle came back with heavily toasted cask heads, and that method was allowed.

What is Hedonism?

The first bottle of the house, from 2000, made entirely of grain whisky. That was unheard of at the time: grain was seen as a filler for blends. It now appears annually; we have the 2024, 2025 and 2026 editions.

Does ’t Bockje also ship Compass Box abroad?

Yes. We ship to around forty countries. Email info@bockje.nl if you want to know whether your country is included.
