Why here

First a label, much later a distillery

Ezra Brooks existed first as a brand and only much later as a distillery. The label was launched on the market in the late 1950s as a counterpart to Jack Daniel’s: the same square bottle, the same black and white, the same emphasis on charcoal filtering. Brown-Forman sued for trademark infringement and lost that case in 1961.

After that the brand wandered between various producers until Luxco bought it in 1993 and for decades had its whiskey distilled under contract. Only in 2018 did Luxco open its own house with Lux Row in Bardstown. Since 1 April 2021 it has been wholly owned by MGP Ingredients.

About the name

There has never been an Ezra Brooks

  • The brand in brief
  • In the late 1950sThe brand is conceived.
  • 1961Brown-Forman loses the lawsuit.
  • 1993Luxco buys the brand.
  • 2018Lux Row opens in Bardstown.

The name was made up. There has never been a distiller called Ezra Brooks; he is an invented figure from the marketing of the late 1950s. That does not make the whiskey any lesser, but it is good to know before you go looking for his history.

Ezra Brooks 99 appeared in January 2021 at ninety-nine proof, or forty-nine point five percent, with a recipe of seventy-eight percent corn, ten percent rye and twelve percent malted barley. The port finish was added in April 2024, announced as the first of an annual series.

Old Ezra is the heavier line. The seven-year-old rye was released in November 2022 at one hundred and fourteen proof, or fifty-seven percent, from two rye recipes: one with fifty-one and one with ninety-five percent rye. The run was three thousand cases. Mind the label: it says Straight Rye Whiskey and not Kentucky Straight Rye.

The brand is older than the stills in which it is now distilled.

Practical

What to look out for

Full proof here means: bottled without dilution after maturation. It is not a legally protected term.

The Old Ezra rye says Straight Rye Whiskey and not Kentucky Straight Rye; that difference is no coincidence.

Frequently asked questions about Ezra Brooks

How much Ezra Brooks does ’t Bockje have in stock?

Two bottles.

Did Ezra Brooks really exist?

No. The name was devised in the late fifties for the label; there has never been a distiller of that name.

Where is it distilled?

The brand belongs to Lux Row Distillers in Bardstown, Kentucky, which opened in 2018. The label does not state per bottle where the distillate comes from; for that, distilling was done under contract for decades.

What is the difference between Ezra Brooks and Old Ezra?

Old Ezra is the heavier line: higher strength, an age on the label and smaller batches.

What does 99 proof mean?

Forty-nine point five percent. In the United States, proof is exactly double the alcohol percentage.
