Why here

The battle for the word Glen

Cape Breton Island is genuinely Gaelic territory: Scottish Gaelic is still spoken there today. Even so, the Scotch Whisky Association held that the name Glen Breton would make buyers think they were buying Scotch, and brought a case over it.

It ran for years and went back and forth: first Glenora won, then the Scots, then Glenora again. In June 2009 the Canadian Supreme Court declined to hear the case, which made it final. In commemoration, a fifteen-year-old later appeared under the name Battle of the Glen.

About the ice wine casks

The most Canadian thing you can do with Scottish stills

  • The distillery in brief
  • 1990The first distillation.
  • MacLellan’s BrookWhere the process water comes from.
  • 1999The founder dies before the first ten-year-old.
  • 2009The supreme court closes the case.

Icewine is a Canadian speciality: grapes that stay frozen on the vine and are only picked in freezing cold. Glenora uses the empty casks from it to finish its single malt for a few months. That produces the versions called Ice of Ice Wine Barrel.

The distillery was set up by Bruce Jardine, with Scottish equipment and a strictly Scottish method: only water, barley and yeast, and at least ten years in cask. The company went under financially and was sold in 1994; Jardine died in 1999, before the first ten-year-old reached the market.

Production is small: a few hundred casks a year. Attached to the distillery is a hotel-restaurant that is one of the attractions of the island.

Ice wine casks from its own country, modelled on Scottish practice.

Practical

What these bottles go with

The ice wine finish gives a sweet, fruity note that you do not come across in Scotch whisky. Interesting next to a regular ten-year-old.

For anyone who collects whisky from unexpected corners, this is one of the more fun bottles to have on the shelf.
