Why here

The complete Soleo Collection, plus seventeen individual casks

From the distillery itself we have the whole age ladder: ten, twelve, fifteen, eighteen and twenty-five years, plus the Whisky Maker’s Cut and two bottles from the older Reserve series that is no longer on the market.

In addition, seventeen single casks from bottlers, from a Signatory at fifty euros to a thirty-three-year-old from 1988. Two of them are at 65.5 percent. After the GlenAllachie, those are the strongest bottles on our shelf. Not sure which one you need? Give us a call. That is what we are here for.

About the distillery

A brand that changed owners, with a blend

  • The distillery in five moments
  • 1879Production begins in Rothes, built by James Stuart & Co.
  • 1897–1922Two fires and an explosion; in 1922, 900,000 litres are lost.
  • 1994The first vintage bottlings appear.
  • 2010Berry Bros & Rudd swaps Cutty Sark for the Glenrothes brand.
  • 2017Edrington buys the brand back; the Soleo Collection arrives in 2018.

The Glenrothes is in Rothes, the Speyside town that also houses Glen Grant and Speyburn. The distillery lies on the Burn of Rothes, has no visitor centre and can only be visited by invitation.

For a long time Glenrothes was mainly a blending malt: the core of Cutty Sark and a pillar of The Famous Grouse. Only in 1994 did it get its own range, and that was unusual: vintages rather than ages on the label, in a bottle shaped like a hand grenade with a handwritten label.

The brand has a strange ownership history. In 2010 Edrington swapped the Glenrothes brand with Berry Bros & Rudd for the blend Cutty Sark, but the distillery itself stayed with Edrington. For seven years brand and distillery therefore had different owners. In 2017 Edrington bought the brand back and in 2018 replaced the vintages with ages: the Soleo Collection.

The name Soleo comes from the way grapes for sherry are dried in the sun. Almost all the casks here come from Jerez.

Vintages or ages?

Between 1994 and 2018, Glenrothes put a vintage on the label instead of an age. That was unusual and had a loyal following, but it made comparing difficult. Since the Soleo Collection, an age statement is back on the label. Older bottles with a vintage (such as the Ancestor’s Reserve on this page) come from that in-between period.

Frequently asked questions about The Glenrothes

How many Glenrothes does ’t Bockje have in stock?

Twenty-eight bottles, all available immediately: eleven from the distillery itself and seventeen from independent bottlers.

What is the Soleo Collection?

The distillery’s current range, since 2018, with ages on the label: ten, twelve, fifteen, eighteen and twenty-five years plus the Whisky Maker’s Cut. The name refers to the drying of sherry grapes in the sun.

Why do older bottles show vintages instead of ages?

Between 1994 and 2018 Glenrothes put a vintage year on the label. That was unusual, but made comparison difficult. Since the Soleo Collection, an age statement is back on the label.

Which Glenrothes should you try first?

The twelve-year-old. It shows the sherry-rich house style well at a reasonable price. If you want more power, the Whisky Maker’s Cut at 48.8 percent is the logical step.

Is it true that the brand and the distillery had different owners?

Yes. In 2010 Edrington swapped the Glenrothes brand with Berry Bros & Rudd for the blend Cutty Sark, but the distillery stayed with Edrington. Only in 2017 did brand and distillery come together again.

Can you visit the distillery?

No. Glenrothes has no visitor centre and can only be visited by invitation.

Does ’t Bockje also ship Glenrothes abroad?

Yes. We ship to around forty countries. Email info@bockje.nl if you want to know whether your country is included.
