Why here

Old vintages of a light malt

Glen Grant is known for a clear, apple-like style that you mostly encounter in young bottlings. That is exactly why the old bottlings are interesting: what happens to such a light spirit after twenty-five or forty years in the cask? We have four of them, from Van Wees, Signatory and Gordon & MacPhail.

Alongside it, the fifteen-year-old at the distillery's own batch strength, at fifty percent. Not sure which one you need? Give us a call. That is what we are here for.

About the distillery

The Major, his stills and his garden

  • The distillery in five moments
  • 1840The brothers John and James Grant start the first licensed distillery in Rothes.
  • 1872‘The Major’ takes over and installs tall, slim stills with purifiers.
  • 1886He lays out the Victorian garden, with plants from his travels.
  • 1897Across the way a second distillery rises, later Caperdonich.
  • 2006Campari buys Glen Grant.

Glen Grant is in Rothes in Speyside and was founded in 1840 by the brothers John and James Grant, who had previously distilled illegally. It was the first licensed distillery in the town, and the spot was well chosen: the Spey close by, barley in the area and a seaport sixteen kilometres away.

The man who made the whisky what it is was James ‘The Major’ Grant, who took over the company in 1872. He installed tall, slender stills and fitted them with purifiers in the lyne arm: these catch the heavier vapours and let only the lightest through. Glen Grant is the only distillery in Speyside that does this on both the first and the second distillation. The result is a strikingly clean, fruity whisky with green apple as its signature.

The Major was also first in other fields: the first car in the Highlands, and Glen Grant was one of the first distilleries with electric light. In 1886 he laid out a Victorian garden of almost nine hectares, with plants he brought back from his travels. That garden is still there.

In Italy Glen Grant has been the best-selling single malt for decades. That is also the reason the Italian Campari bought the distillery in 2006.

What does a purifier do?

A purifier sits in the pipe between the still and the condenser and works as a pre-condenser: the heavier vapours condense there and run back into the still via a pipe, so that only the lightest vapours pass through. That is called reflux, and the more of it, the lighter and clearer the whisky. At Glen Grant this happens in both distillations, which explains the exceptionally light style of this house.

Frequently asked questions about Glen Grant

How many Glen Grant does ’t Bockje have in stock?

Five bottles, all available for immediate delivery. The Major’s Reserve is temporarily sold out.

Why is Glen Grant so light in flavour?

Because of the tall, slender stills with purification chambers. These catch the heavier vapours and send them back into the still, so that only the lightest get through. Glen Grant is the only distillery in Speyside to do this in both distillations.

Which Glen Grant should you try first?

The fifteen-year-old at batch strength. It is at fifty percent and shows the fruity style of the house well without any water having come into play.

Who was The Major?

James Grant, who took over the distillery in 1872. He installed the stills that define the style, laid out a Victorian garden in 1886 and was the first man in the Highlands to own a car.

Why is Glen Grant so well known in Italy?

The brand has been the best-selling single malt there for decades. That was also the reason the Italian Campari bought the distillery in 2006.

Does ’t Bockje also ship Glen Grant abroad?

Yes. We ship to around forty countries. Email info@bockje.nl if you want to know whether your country is included.
