Why here

The whole age range on one shelf

The twelve-year-old is everywhere. What you rarely see side by side is the complete age range: twelve, fifteen, eighteen and twenty-one years next to each other, with a twenty-seven-year-old above them.

In addition, three bottles with their own cask finish (Lustau sherry, pedro ximénez and moscatel) and the twelve-year-old at cask strength. Not sure which one you need? Give us a call. That is what we are here for.

The age series

Four bottles, four ages, the same single pot still.

About the brand

A name from 1912

  • Redbreast in four facts
  • 1912The wine house Gilbey uses the name Redbreast for the first time.
  • 1971Bow Street in Dublin closes; production moves to County Cork.
  • 1985Gilbey stops; a year later Irish Distillers buys the name.
  • 1991Redbreast returns to the market.

The name Redbreast appears in 1912 at the London wine house Gilbey, which had had a branch in Dublin since 1861. The chairman was a keen birdwatcher and named the whiskey after the robin. The distillate came from Jameson at Bow Street in Dublin; Gilbey had it mature in its own sherry casks.

In 1971 Bow Street closed and production moved to County Cork. Gilbey stopped in 1985 and Irish Distillers bought the name a year later. In 1991 Redbreast returned to the market. Since then it has come from the New Midleton distillery in County Cork.

Single pot still means that the mash consists of malted and unmalted barley and that distilling takes place in copper pot stills. That unmalted barley gives the oily, slightly spicy structure by which you recognise the style. Outside Ireland it is hardly found at all.

Unmalted barley in the mash: that is what sets single pot still apart from single malt.

Three cask finishes

The same single pot still, three kinds of fortified wine.
