Two things called Hogshead
A hogshead is first and foremost a cask of about two hundred and fifty litres. It is made by taking apart the staves of an American bourbon barrel and building a larger cask from them with extra staves and new heads. It is the most widely used cask type in Scotch whisky maturation, and that is why the word appears on hundreds of labels where it has nothing to do with this brand.
In addition, Hogshead is the brand name of a Dutch independent bottler. Toon van Rooij started by importing foreign bottlers and from 2022 released his own casks under the Hogshead Indie label. This page is about those bottles.

The starting point is outspoken: young whisky from refill casks, where the wood does not overpower the distillery. Natural colour, no chill filtration, small batches. The first vintages came out at forty-eight percent; more recent releases appear at cask strength.
Some labels carry a name that does not look like a distillery. Chain Pier is one: a small pilot plant in Granton near Edinburgh, where from December 2018 a handful of casks were filled while a larger distillery was being built elsewhere. There are only a few dozen of them.
On other bottles there is a cover name. It is used when a small amount of malt from another distillery has been added to a cask; legally it is then a blended malt and the distillery name may no longer appear on the label. What exactly lies behind it is never confirmed by the owner.
The cask must not overpower the distillate.
One name, two houses
The online shop also lists a bottle called Hogshead Fine Old Blended Malt. It does not come from this bottler but from another house; only the name coincides. We have therefore listed it separately in the register.
If you come across the word hogshead in the middle of a product name, it refers to the cask type and not to this brand.

Frequently asked questions about Hogshead
How much Hogshead does ’t Bockje have in stock?
Six bottles from the bottler Hogshead Indie.
What is a hogshead?
A cask of about two hundred and fifty litres, built from the staves of an American bourbon barrel with extra staves and new heads added. The most widely used cask type in Scotch whisky maturation.
Who is behind the Hogshead brand?
Hogshead Imports from Grave, run by Toon van Rooij. The company imports foreign bottlers and, from 2022, released its own casks under the name Hogshead Indie.
Is this a distillery?
No. It is an independent bottler: nothing is distilled, casks are bought and bottled.
Why does it sometimes say a name I do not know?
That can be a small distillery, such as Chain Pier near Edinburgh, or a cover name for a cask to which a little malt from elsewhere has been added. In the latter case the distillery name may not be used.
