What exactly is in it
Some online shops list this as single malt. That is not correct. The mash bill consists of wheat, rye and corn, so this is grain whisky. That is not a lesser category but a different one: lighter and sweeter, with a texture of its own.
On provenance too, we prefer to be precise rather than assertive. Hooghoudt presents the range as Dutch whisky from Groningen; an authoritative independent reviewer writes that part of the distillate was bought in. Until that has been clarified, we do not call it its own distillate.

One hundred and thirty-seven years of Groningen
- The company in brief
- 1888Started in a cellar on the Oosterstraat.
- 1988Move to the Euvelgunne business park.
- 2025Taken over by a French group.
- End of 2025Production in Groningen closes.
Hooghoudt started in 1888 in a cellar on the Oosterstraat in Groningen and grew into the genever brand of the North, in family hands for generations. The whisky range was only added at the end.
In May 2025 the company was taken over by a French drinks group. At the end of 2025 the Groningen production site closed and production moved to Ghent; the brand continues to exist. These bottles are therefore a tangible piece of Groningen's distilling past.
The range runs from five years in beer casks, via seven years in bourbon and oloroso, to nine years entirely in oloroso. According to the company, the water comes from the Drenthe plateau.
Grain whisky from the land of genever.
What these bottles go with
For anyone who knows genever this is a logical step: the same grain base, but years in cask.
The three bottles side by side clearly show what the cask does: beer, bourbon with sherry, and fully oloroso.
