Why here

The regular and the smoked side by side

Monkey Shoulder was devised for the bar: a blended malt of Speyside malts that can go straight into a cocktail without fuss. The Smokey Monkey is the same idea with smoke added, from Highland peat instead of Islay peat.

We have both on the shelf, so you can see the difference in one go. If you are not sure which one you need, give us a call. That is what we are here for.

The two bottles

Both at 40 percent, both blended malt.

About the brand

Named after an occupational disease

  • Monkey Shoulder in four facts
  • Monkey shoulderthe nickname for the shoulder complaint of maltsters.
  • 3Speyside malts formed the original recipe.
  • 40%the bottling strength of both bottles.
  • Highlandthe origin of the peat in the Smokey Monkey.

The name comes from the malting house. Anyone who turned barley by hand for days on the malting floor suffered from an arm that afterwards remained hanging somewhat limp. In trade language that was called a monkey shoulder. William Grant & Sons used that name for a blended malt from Speyside.

A blended malt consists exclusively of malt whisky, but from several distilleries. There is no grain whisky in it. The original recipe was built from three Speyside malts of the house itself; the brand makes no statements about the current composition.

The Smokey Monkey was added later, at the insistence of bartenders who asked for a smoky version. The peat for it comes from the mainland and not from Islay, which gives a different, drier smoke. Both bottles are filled at forty percent.

The name is an occupational disease, not a distillery.
