Why here

Eight editions of the same islands bottle

Of Rock Island you usually only see the regular bottling. We have eight: the standard, the ten-year-old, sherry editions of fourteen and sixteen years, a finish on tequila casks, the Year of the Dragon at almost fifty-five percent and two bottles that are still on the shelf under the old name Rock Oyster.

Put them side by side and you taste what age and cask do to the same composition. Not sure which one you need? Give us a call. That is what we are here for.

Where to start

The regular bottling and the ten-year-old.

About the series

From Rock Oyster to Rock Island

  • The range in four facts
  • 1948Fred Douglas Laing starts his company in Glasgow.
  • 2015the islands bottle appears, still then as Rock Oyster.
  • 2019the name becomes Rock Island; the series itself remains.
  • 46,8%the bottling strength of the standard bottle, without chill filtration or colouring.

Douglas Laing is a family business from Glasgow, founded in 1948 by Fred Douglas Laing. For this series the house does not distil itself but buys and combines: the Remarkable Regional Malts each represent a Scottish region. Rock Island is the islands part.

The bottle contains malt whisky from Islay, Arran, Jura and Orkney. There is no grain whisky in it: a blended malt consists exclusively of malt whisky, but from several distilleries. The standard bottling goes into the bottle at 46.8 percent, without chill filtration and without added colouring.

Until 2019 the series was called Rock Oyster. Douglas Laing changed the name because oysters turned out to be too much a matter of taste on the world market; the whisky itself stayed. We still have two bottles on the shelf under the old name, including an eighteen-year-old.

Four islands in one bottle, and no distillery name on the label.

Frequently asked questions about Rock Island

How much Rock Island does ’t Bockje have in stock?

Eight different bottles, two of which are still under the old name Rock Oyster. All eight are available at the moment.

What is the difference between Rock Island and Rock Oyster?

Only the name. Douglas Laing released the island bottle in 2015 as Rock Oyster and changed the name to Rock Island in 2019. Older bottlings are still on the shelf under the first name.

Which islands are included?

Islay, Arran, Jura and Orkney. The label carries no distillery name; it is precisely about the combination.

What is a blended malt?

A whisky that consists exclusively of malt whisky, but from several distilleries. There is no grain whisky in it, which sets it apart from an ordinary blend.

Is Rock Island peated?

It contains malt whisky from Islay, so there is smoke present. How pronounced it is varies per edition; it is not heavily peated.
