Why here

Three official and twelve independent

Royal Brackla is one bottle at most shops: the twelve-year-old. We have fifteen. Besides the official twelve, eighteen and twenty-one years there are twelve independent bottlings, from Cadenhead, Gordon & MacPhail, Signatory, Claxton’s, Finn Thomson, Infrequent Flyers, The Single Cask, The Ultimate and The Maltman.

They range from nine to seventeen years old and from forty-six to well over fifty-nine percent. The same distillery, but each time a different cask and a different hand in the selection. If you are not sure which one you need, give us a call. That is what we are here for.

The official series

Three bottles from the distillery itself.

About the distillery

The first whisky with a royal warrant

  • Royal Brackla in five facts
  • 1812captain William Fraser founds the distillery on the Cawdor estate.
  • 1833King William IV grants the warrant; Queen Victoria renews it in 1838.
  • 1985the distillery closes and stays closed for six years.
  • 1998John Dewar & Sons, part of Bacardi, takes it over.
  • 2019the distillery’s own series of twelve, eighteen and twenty-one years is coming out.

Royal Brackla stands on the Cawdor estate near Nairn, on the northern edge of the Highlands. Captain William Fraser founded it in 1812. A little over twenty years later, in 1833, King William IV granted it a royal warrant. It was the first whisky distillery to receive one. Queen Victoria renewed it in 1838.

That warrant gave rise to the name under which the whisky was sold in the nineteenth century: The King’s Own Whisky. Merchants advertised it as whisky distilled expressly for the king.

The distillery was idle from 1985 to 1991. Since 1998 it has belonged to John Dewar & Sons, part of Bacardi, and since 2019 its own series of single malts has appeared again. The water comes from the Cawdor Burn and the Cursack Springs.

A royal warrant from 1833, and only since 2019 once again its own range of single malts.

Twelve independent bottlings

Nine to seventeen years old, most at cask strength. Every cask is one of a kind.

Frequently asked questions about Royal Brackla

How many bottles of Royal Brackla does ’t Bockje have in stock?

Fifteen different bottles: three from the distillery itself and twelve from independent bottlers. All fifteen are currently available.

Why is it called Royal Brackla?

Because King William IV granted the distillery a royal warrant in 1833. It was the first whisky distillery to receive one; Queen Victoria renewed it in 1838.

Where is the distillery?

On the Cawdor estate near Nairn, on the northern edge of the Highlands. The water comes from the Cawdor Burn and the Cursack Springs.

What is an independent bottling?

A bottle that is not put on the market by the distillery itself, but by a bottler who buys in casks and decides for themselves when and how they go into the bottle. Usually it is a single cask, bottled undiluted.

What is the difference from the official range?

The official twelve, eighteen and twenty-one years rely on sherry casks and are bottled at 40 or 46 percent. The independent bottlings are almost all single casks at cask strength, up to just over fifty-nine percent.
