A dye works that became a distillery
Andreas Thümmler, a former investment banker, founded St. Kilian on 27 September 2012 and converted a disused textile dye works in Rüdenau into a distillery. The first new make ran on 17 March 2016, and the first bottle came out on 12 May 2019.
The Scottish influence lies in the equipment and the method: two copper pot stills of six thousand litres each from Forsyths in Rothes, washbacks likewise from Scotland, and the Scottish two-stage process.

Almost three hundred types of cask
- The distillery in brief
- RüdenauLandkreis Miltenberg, Unterfranken.
- ForsythsThe stills, from Rothes in Scotland.
- 800.000Litres of maximum annual capacity.
- 284Various cask types, as indicated.
What sets St. Kilian apart is its cask palette. In 2019 more than ninety types were already in use; later figures mention 284. That means that two bottlings are rarely exactly the same.
The maximum annual capacity is eight hundred thousand litres, but actual production was well below that: around three hundred thousand litres according to a figure from 2021. That difference is good to know when you come across claims about size.
Master distiller Mario Rudolf announced in April 2026 that he would leave as of July of that year. The position will not be filled again; leadership goes to a team.
Almost three hundred cask types, so rarely two identical bottles.
