The rarest region of Scotland
Campbeltown was once the whisky capital of the world, with dozens of distilleries on a peninsula you can drive through in half an hour. A handful of them are left. That makes Campbeltown the smallest and rarest of the Scotch whisky regions.
The Gauldrons sums up the region in one bottle. It is a blended malt: exclusively malt whisky from several Campbeltown distilleries, without grain whisky. Which houses go into it is not disclosed, and that is a deliberate choice by the bottler.

A bay and a spider’s web
- The brand in brief
- 1948Douglas Laing is founded in Glasgow.
- 2017The Gauldrons launched.
- MachrihanishWhere the bay lies, on the west coast of Kintyre.
- NumberedEvery batch gets its own number.
The Gauldrons is a real bay on the Atlantic west coast of Kintyre, just north of the Mull of Kintyre near the village of Machrihanish. The Gaelic name means bay of the storms, and anyone who looks at the map understands why: it is the side where the ocean meets the land head on.
There is a spider web on the bottle and the tube. It refers to the legend of Robert the Bruce, who, according to the story, was inspired in this region by a spider that kept trying to weave its web.
The brand belongs to the Remarkable Regional Malts series by Douglas Laing, in which each region has its own bottle: Big Peat for Islay, Scallywag for Speyside and Timorous Beastie for the Highlands. Besides the standard bottle, there are cask strength and cask-finish versions.
The smallest whisky region in Scotland, in one bottle.
What these bottles go with
Campbeltown has its own signature: briny, with an oily texture and a hint of smoke. This bottle is an accessible way to get to know it.
Because it is a batch product, each batch differs slightly. Comparing pays off.
