A bottler you have in your home more often than you think
If you have ever drunk Big Peat, Scallywag or The Epicurean, you drank Douglas Laing. This family business from Glasgow is behind a good part of our range, spread over several series.

If you are not sure which one you need, just give us a call. That is what we are here for.

Two brothers, two companies
- The house in five moments
- 1948Fred Douglas Laing starts the business in Glasgow.
- 2009Big Peat is released and becomes the beginning of the Remarkable Regional Malts.
- 2013The brothers Fred and Stewart split the company.
- 2019Douglas Laing buys the Strathearn distillery in Perthshire.
- nowThird generation: Cara Laing is director of whisky.
Fred Douglas Laing started his company in 1948 in Glasgow, just after the war, blending and bottling. His sons Fred and Stewart ran it together until 2013. Then they divided the assets and the brands: Fred kept the name Douglas Laing, Stewart started Hunter Laing and later built the distillery Ardnahoe on Islay.
What made Douglas Laing big is the idea behind the Remarkable Regional Malts: for every Scottish region, a blended malt meant to capture the style of that area. Big Peat came out in 2009 for Islay and was an immediate success; Scallywag for Speyside, Timorous Beastie for the Highlands, The Epicurean for the Lowlands and Rock Island for the islands followed.
Then there are the single casks: Provenance for the young ones, Old Particular for the middle range and XOP for the rare old casks. In 2019 the company bought its first own distillery, Strathearn in Perthshire.
Seven brands from this one house are on our shelf. That says enough about how much of our shelf comes from here.
Which series is which?
Provenance: young single casks, usually at 46 or 48 percent. Premier Barrel: single casks in an earthenware decanter. Old Particular: the middle range, often at 48.4 percent. XOP: Xtra Old Particular, the old and rare casks. Double Barrel: two distilleries together in one bottle. And the Remarkable Regional Malts are blended malts per region.

Frequently asked questions about Douglas Laing
How many Douglas Laing does ’t Bockje have in stock?
Ten bottles under the Douglas Laing name itself. In addition, we carry seven brands from this house: Big Peat, Scallywag, The Epicurean, Rock Island, Old Particular, Provenance and XOP.
What is the difference between Douglas Laing and Hunter Laing?
Until 2013 it was one company. Then the brothers Fred and Stewart Laing split the assets: Fred kept the name Douglas Laing, Stewart started Hunter Laing. The latter later built the Ardnahoe distillery on Islay.
What are the Remarkable Regional Malts?
A range of blended malts that each aim to capture the style of a Scottish region: Big Peat for Islay, Scallywag for Speyside, Timorous Beastie for the Highlands, The Epicurean for the Lowlands and Rock Island for the islands.
What is Double Barrel?
A bottle in which malt from two distilleries comes together, for example an Islay malt with a Highland malt. We also have one with an Indian and a Scottish malt.
Which Douglas Laing is best to try first?
A Premier Barrel at around seventy euros: a single cask with the distillery simply on the label. If you want a blended malt, Big Peat is the best-known way in.
