How do you visit a Scottish distillery?
Scotland has more than 70 distilleries with a visitor centre, spread across five whisky regions. Book your tour in advance, because groups are small and opening times vary by season. A standard tour with tasting cost around 7 to 20 pounds in 2026, and for a tasting eighteen years is the minimum age. In the shop in Bathmen there are 2,794 Scotch whiskies from 328 brands.

How many Scottish distilleries have a visitor center?
Scotland has well over seventy distilleries with their own visitor centre, according to the Scotch Whisky Association.
That is only a portion of all working distilleries, because by no means every production site is set up for visitors. The centres that took part in the count of the Scotch Whisky Association handled 2,004,918 visits together in 2022, spread over 45 participating centres. Some distilleries admit only groups or work exclusively by appointment by email.
How do you book a tour at a Scottish distillery?
You book in advance with the distillery itself, via the booking form on its own site or by phone.
VisitScotland says booking in advance is the only way to be sure of your place. Tours are small: at distilleries in Speyside, sometimes no more than fifteen people join. Opening hours vary by season, and in winter visitor centres are often closed one or two days a week. Around Christmas and New Year, some centres close for two weeks. If you are coming with a larger group, please contact them directly.
What does a standard tour with tasting cost?
A standard tour with a short tasting cost about seven to twenty pounds per person in 2026.
On the Malt Whisky Trail in Moray Speyside, that price runs from seven pounds for a standard tour with two drams, up to twenty pounds for a tour at which four whiskies are poured. Separate tastings start at around five pounds and can be added to your tour. Anyone who is driving gets a sample set to take away at many centres instead of being poured a dram on the spot.
Which whisky regions lie close together?
Speyside is the most compact region: nine locations on the Malt Whisky Trail are in Moray Speyside, doable in a round trip of two to five days.
The Scotch Whisky Regulations 2009 protect Highland, Lowland and Speyside as regions, and Campbeltown and Islay as localities. Speyside has the highest density of distilleries in Scotland; the Malt Whisky Trail features eight distilleries and a cooperage. Islay and Campbeltown require a ferry or a long drive and so you do not combine them with Speyside on the same day.
What may be taken on the plane?
Bottles of whisky go in checked luggage, because at most British airports a container in hand luggage may not hold more than 100 ml.
If you buy the bottle after the security check at the airport or on the plane, it may go into the cabin, as long as it is in the sealed security bag with the receipt visible inside. You keep that bag closed until your final destination. A limited number of airports allow containers of up to 2 litres, but that differs per airport, so check the rules of both your departure and your transfer airport.
Which age limit applies at a tasting?
In Scotland eighteen is the legal limit for buying alcohol, and that limit also applies at a tasting in a visitor centre.

Short answer
Short answers to related questions
- How much whisky may you bring into the Netherlands tax-free?
- Per traveller, 1 litre of spirits above 22 percent is exempt, or alternatively 2 litres of intermediate products such as port or sherry, plus 4 litres of still wine and 16 litres of beer. Above that quantity you pay import duties, excise duty and VAT.
- Which five whisky regions does Scotland officially recognise?
- The Scotch Whisky Regulations 2009 protect Highland, Lowland and Speyside as a region, and Campbeltown and Islay as a locality. Together these form the five areas whiskies are classified into.
- Do you have to book a distillery tour in advance?
- That is wise. Groups are small and at some distilleries only fifteen people go on each tour, so without a reservation you may be left standing at the door for nothing.
- May children come along on a distillery tour?
- At a number of distilleries yes, sometimes without an entrance fee. Tasting and drinking remain reserved for those aged eighteen and over.
- When are Scottish visitor centres open?
- Most are open daily, but the hours differ and in winter the offer is slimmer, with some weekends closed. Check the opening hours just before your visit.
