How long does whisky keep after opening?
Whisky does not spoil. With at least 40 percent alcohol, the legal lower limit for Scotch, nothing grows in the bottle. What does change is the flavour: as soon as there is air in the bottle, the whisky slowly goes flat. A full opened bottle keeps for years. From about half empty it goes noticeably faster, because then there is as much air as whisky in the bottle.
In brief
The key figures
| Legal minimum alcohol content of Scotch whisky | 40 percent by volume |
|---|---|
| Best-before date required | No, spirits do not have to carry a minimum durability date |
| Storing unopened | Upright, cool, dry and dark, outside the fridge |
| Opened and still full | Flavour stays stable for years |
| Opened and half full | About 35 centiliters of air to 35 centiliters of whisky in a 70-centiliter bottle |
| Opened and a quarter full | About 52 centilitres of air to 18 centilitres of whisky |
| Storage temperature | Room temperature, out of direct sunlight, not in the fridge |
| Age limit for sale | 18 years, Alcohol Act article 20 |
Can whisky go bad?
Whisky does not spoil in the sense of becoming unsafe, because at 40 percent alcohol or more no bacterium or mould survives.
That is also why spirits do not need to carry a best-before date. What does happen is loss of flavour. Oxygen in the bottle reacts slowly with the aroma compounds, and volatile substances escape past the stopper. The whisky does not go bad, it becomes flatter: less aroma, a shorter finish.
When does an opened bottle of whisky go off?
An opened bottle noticeably declines as soon as there is more air than whisky in it, and that tipping point lies around halfway.
Work it out for a bottle of 70 centilitres. Right after opening, there is hardly any air above the drink. Half full, there are 35 centilitres of air to 35 centilitres of whisky. At a quarter full, that is about 52 centilitres of air to 18 centilitres of whisky, so almost three times as much air as drink. Every time you open the bottle, that air is refreshed.
What do you do with a bottle that is half empty?
Pour the whisky into a smaller glass bottle with a tight-fitting cap as soon as about a third remains.
Fill that small bottle to just below the neck, so that little air remains. Use glass and not plastic, and put a label on it with name and date. An alternative is a spray can of inert gas, which displaces the air above the drink.
How do you store an unopened bottle of whisky?
Store an unopened bottle upright in a cool, dry and dark place, outside the fridge and out of direct sunlight.
Standing upright matters with spirits, because alcohol of 40 percent and higher attacks a natural cork if it is permanently in contact with it. Sunlight makes the label fade and warms the bottle, so that the pressure in the bottle fluctuates. For distilled drinks above 25 percent the Voedingscentrum gives the same advice: cool, dry, dark and not in the fridge.
Does whisky still change age in the bottle?
Whisky does not mature any further in glass, because the age on the label is the time in cask and that stops at bottling.
The Scotch Whisky Regulations 2009 prescribe that an age statement is expressed in years and refers to the youngest whisky in the bottle. A bottle that has stood in the cupboard for twenty years has therefore not become twenty years older. What does happen in those twenty years depends on how much air is in the bottle and how warm the cupboard gets.

Short answer
Short answers to related questions
- Can you keep whisky in the fridge?
- That is possible, but not necessary. A cold glass makes the aromas close up and condensation damages the label.
- Does a pouring stopper help against oxidation?
- A tightly fitting stopper prevents evaporation, but the air that is already in the bottle stays there. Decanting into a smaller bottle helps more.
- Does whisky keep longer in a small bottle?
- As long as it is closed, yes. After opening, a small bottle quickly has a lot of air per centilitre.
- Does this also apply to liqueur?
- No. Liqueur with sugar, cream or fruit juice is more sensitive. Follow the storage advice on the label.
- May whisky be sold to anyone under 18?
- Nee. De Alcoholwet verbiedt het verstrekken van alcohol aan iemand onder de 18 jaar. NIX18.
