What does small batch mean?
Small batch means that a bottling comes from a limited number of casks. How many casks that is, is fixed nowhere: the term is not in the American standards of 27 CFR 5,143 and not in the Scotch Whisky Regulations 2009 with their five categories. One bottler means four casks, another forty.
In brief

What does a bottler mean by small batch?
Small batch indicates a bottling made up from a limited number of casks, rather than from a large blend.
In a regular bottling, dozens to hundreds of casks are blended, so that each batch resembles the previous one. In a small batch the number of casks is smaller, so batches can differ more from one another.
Many bottlers add a batch number. That way you can trace which batch you are holding.
Is small batch in the law?
No, the term does not appear in the American standards of 27 CFR 5,143, nor in the Scotch Whisky Regulations 2009.
The American standards describe classes and types such as bourbon, rye whisky and straight whisky, each with its own requirements for grain, distillation strength and cask. Small batch is not among them.
The Scottish rules recognise five categories: Single Malt, Single Grain, Blended Malt, Blended Grain and Blended Scotch Whisky. Small batch is missing there too.
How many casks are in a small batch?
The number of casks is not laid down anywhere and in practice ranges from a handful to a few dozen.
A bottler does not have to state the number and often does not. Without a figure, the term only says that the batch was smaller than the standard batch of that same bottler.
For a large brand, a small batch can therefore yield more bottles than the entire annual output of a small bottler. The term is relative to the bottler, not to a fixed number.
So what is not allowed on the label?
According to 27 CFR 5,122, a label may not mislead, and every claim must have a factual basis that can be shown to the regulator on request.
The rule also applies to terms without a legal definition. Anyone who puts small batch on the bottle when the batch is not small can be held to account for it.
An age statement is mandatory in the United States for whisky younger than four years. If such a statement is missing on an American bottle, the whisky is as a rule older.
What can you go by instead?
Hard facts on the label are the batch number, the number of bottles, the age, the alcohol percentage and any cask number.
A single cask comes from one single cask and is therefore limited; a small batch is not. If there is a cask number on the bottle, it is not a small batch.
Ask in the shop what the producer itself states about the batch. What the bottler does not specify, we do not fill in.

Short answer
Short answers to related questions
- Is small batch the same as limited edition?
- No. Small batch refers to the number of casks, limited edition to the number of bottles. Neither term is legally defined.
- Is a small batch better than a standard bottling?
- The number of casks says nothing about quality. It says that batches can differ more from one another.
- Does small batch only come from the United States?
- No. The term also appears on bottles from other countries, without any requirement attached to it.
- Why does one batch differ from another?
- Because every cask matures differently. The fewer casks in a blend, the greater the difference between batches.
- Is the number of bottles always stated on a small batch?
- Not always. Stating the edition size is not mandatory and happens more often with single-cask bottlings.
