From 1652 the Cape was a settlement of the Dutch East India Company, intended as a stopover for ships to Asia. That is where winegrowing began, and it explains names such as Mooiplaas, Boschendal and Stellenbosch.
The knowledge came from the French Huguenots who settled in Franschhoek from 1688. And pinotage is the only grape South Africa produced itself: a 1925 cross of pinot noir and cinsault.
