- Chillicountry of origin
The pest that destroyed almost all European vineyards in the nineteenth century never reached Chile: the Andes, the ocean and the desert kept it out. As a result the vines still stand on their own roots, while in Europe almost everything is grafted onto American rootstock.
Chile also has a grape of its own: carménère, once vanished from Bordeaux and for a long time mistaken here for merlot. It was only recognised in 1994.
Chilean vines still stand on their own roots. In Europe that is almost nowhere the case any more.
