Why here

On the alcohol-free shelf, but not 0.0

This page is about Brugse Zot's low-alcohol beer. The regular Brugse Zot Blond and Dubbel are on our beer shelf; this page does not cover them.

Brugse Zot Sport is on our alcohol-free shelf, but it is not 0.0. The brewery states 0.4 percent alcohol. That is a difference you will want to know about if you are deliberately looking for a 0.0: by Dutch standards, 0.4 percent is low-alcohol, not alcohol-free.

The name comes from the brewery. What is in the bottle is a blond beer brewed on the same base as Brugse Zot Blond, from which the alcohol is then removed. We say no more than that, because we make no claims about what a beer might do for you.

About the brewery

Six generations on the Walplein in Brugge

  • The brewery in four facts
  • 1856The year in which the story of De Halve Maan begins.
  • 6Generations of the same family; Xavier Vanneste is the sixth.
  • 2018The year Sportzot came onto the market.
  • 2022The brewery opens a new bottling plant outside the city centre.

Brugse Zot comes from Brouwerij De Halve Maan on the Walplein in Brugge. The brewery's story begins in 1856 and it is still owned by the same family; Xavier Vanneste is the sixth generation. Besides Brugse Zot, the house makes Straffe Hendrik and Blanche De Bruges, among others.

Brewing still takes place in the historic centre of Brugge. In 2022 a new bottling plant was added outside the city.

Sportzot came onto the market in 2018. The brewery calls it its first alcohol-free specialty beer and adds that it is made from Brugse Zot Blond, after which the alcohol is removed naturally. What remains is 0.4 percent.

0.0 percent, 0.4 percent, low-alcohol: where are the limits?

0.0 is not a legal category; the brewer puts it on the label. The law uses other terms, and with this beer in particular that makes a difference.

The Dutch decree on reserved designations (Warenwetbesluit gereserveerde aanduidingen) states that beer may be called alcohol-free at no more than 0.1 percent alcohol. If it contains more, up to and including 1.2 percent, it is called low-alcohol. At 0.4 percent, Brugse Zot Sport falls into that second group.

The Dutch Alcohol Act draws a third line: only from 0.5 percent alcohol does a drink count as an alcoholic beverage, measured at 20 degrees. At 0.4 percent, this beer is just below that.

In short: in Belgium the brewery calls this beer alcohol-free, but by Dutch standards 0.4 percent is low-alcohol. If you really want zero, look for a bottle that says 0.0.
