Why here

An alcohol-free French witbier

This page is only about Kronenbourg’s alcohol-free range. We stock one bottle of it: the 1664 Blanc 0.0% in the 33 centilitre bottle. In our webshop it is listed under the full name Carlsberg Kronenbourg 1664 blanc 0.0%.

A word about the name. Kronenbourg is the brand and 1664 Blanc is the beer; Carlsberg owns the brewery. We have therefore put this page under Kronenbourg, because that is what customers search for.

Also note the country. In our webshop, Denmark is listed as the country of origin for this product. Kronenbourg is a French brand from Alsace; it has been owned by the Danish Carlsberg since 2008. We are passing the origin information on to the supplier.

About the brewery

From the Place du Corbeau to Cronenbourg

  • The brewery in four facts
  • 1664Geronimus Hatt founds the brewery in Strasbourg.
  • 1850Move to the higher-lying Cronenbourg; that is where the brand name comes from.
  • 1952The year in which Kronenbourg 1664 was first brewed.
  • 2008Kronenbourg joins Carlsberg in April.

Brasseries Kronenbourg was founded in 1664 by Geronimus Hatt, who had obtained his master brewer's diploma in 1649 and started the Canon brewery at the Place du Corbeau in Strasbourg. His son Claude took over the trade from him in 1683.

The river Ill burst its banks so often that in 1850 the brewery moved to the higher-lying Cronenbourg, a district of Strasbourg. That is where the brand name comes from. In 1922 the company continued under the name Tigre Bock; after the Second World War, Kronenbourg became the company name.

After that the company changed hands a few times: in 1970 it went to the BSN group, in 2000 to the British Scottish & Newcastle and in April 2008 to the Danish Carlsberg. The main brewery is in Obernai in Alsace; according to the owner, almost three hundred other beer brands are also made there.

Kronenbourg 1664 is a 5.5 percent blond lager, first brewed in 1952, with a share of Strisselspalt, an aroma hop from Alsace. The Blanc is a different beer: a wheat beer with citrus notes. This bottle is its alcohol-free version.

There are two main routes to alcohol-free beer. The brewer can limit fermentation or stop it early, with a special yeast or at a lower temperature, so that hardly any alcohol forms. Or he first brews a full beer and then removes the alcohol, by heating or vacuum distillation; aromas evaporate along with it, and these are returned in the process.

The year on the label is not a beer style but a founding year: 1664, Strasbourg.

Alcohol-free, 0.0 and low-alcohol

The label of this bottle says 0.0 per cent. In the Netherlands a beer may be called alcohol-free if it contains less than 0.1 per cent alcohol. If it contains between 0.1 and 1.2 per cent, it is called low-alcohol. A beer of 0.3 per cent is therefore not alcohol-free in the Netherlands but low-alcohol.

So 0.0 on the label means: below that limit of 0.1 per cent. It is a labelling term, not an arithmetical zero.

In other countries the limits are different. In France, the country this brand comes from, the limit is 1.2 percent, in Belgium 0.5 percent and in Spain 1 percent. As a result the same beer can be called alcohol-free in one country and not in another.
