Why here

A Trappist without alcohol

Trappist beer and alcohol-free beer are two worlds you rarely find in one bottle. La Trappe Nillis is that exception: brewed at the brewery of the Onze Lieve Vrouw van Koningshoeven abbey in Berkel-Enschot, and according to the label information at 0 percent alcohol.

For anyone who normally drinks a dark Trappist and does not want to end up with a light pilsner on an evening without alcohol, this is one of the few options on the shelf.

Please note: in our online shop this beer lists Belgium as the country of origin. That is an error in the product data. Nillis is brewed in the Netherlands, in Berkel-Enschot near Tilburg; we are passing it on to the supplier.

About the beer

Nillis: from nil, and from the Nile

  • The beer in brief
  • 2021Launched at the abbey on 21 August.
  • Berkel-EnschotBrewed at Bierbrouwerij de Koningshoeven, in the Netherlands.
  • NillisThe name comes from the Latin for nothing, and also refers to Nilus, the Nile.
  • UgandaWhere the monastery has a daughter monastery; hence that Nile.

Nillis was launched on 21 August 2021 at Bierbrouwerij de Koningshoeven in Berkel-Enschot, the brewery of the Our Lady of Koningshoeven abbey. The beer was presented as the world's first alcohol-free Trappist beer.

The name is a play on words with a double meaning. It comes from the Latin word for nothing, which refers to the 0.0 percent, and at the same time from Nilus, the Nile. The monastery has a daughter house in Uganda, where the Nile has its source.

Whether a beer may be called Trappist depends not on the alcohol percentage but on where and under whose supervision it is brewed: within the walls of a genuine Trappist abbey. Nillis meets that requirement, and is thus the rare combination of Trappist and 0.0.

Nillis from nothing, and from the Nile. Two meanings in one name.

What does 0.0 mean, and where is the limit?

In the Netherlands, the Commodities Act determines what may appear on the label. The term alcohol-free may be used up to and including 0.1 percent alcohol. Low-alcohol runs from more than 0.1 percent up to and including 1.2 percent. A beer of 0.2 or 0.3 percent therefore belongs to that second group, even if “non alcoholic” is printed in large letters on the packaging.

The Dutch Alcohol Act draws its own line: a drink with more than 0.5 percent alcohol at twenty degrees counts as an alcoholic beverage. Those two limits are not in the same place, and that is where much of the confusion comes from.

0.0 is not itself a legal designation. It is a figure brewers put on the label for beer that contains practically no alcohol. It appears on Nillis, and the label information in our webshop states 0 percent. That is therefore a different category from a beer with 0.2 or 0.3 percent on the packaging.
