A complete trio in one go
Anyone looking for alcohol-free wine usually ends up with a single white. We have the whole trio from L’OIE: white, rosé and red. That saves searching when you are buying for a table with different preferences.
The label says 0°, with the degree sign used in France for alcohol content. The label information in our webshop gives the same figure as 0 percent by volume.
The rosé is made from merlot and cabernet, the rouge from merlot. For the blanc, no grape is stated on the label line; we are checking that with the supplier before we write anything about it.

What happens to the wine before it goes into the bottle
- L’OIE in four facts
- FranceThe country of origin on all three labels.
- 0°The spelling the brand uses on the label.
- 3Bottles in our range: blanc, rosé and rouge.
- 75 clThe bottle size of all three.
Dealcoholised wine starts out as ordinary wine. The grapes are harvested, pressed and fermented until there is real wine, with alcohol in it. Then that alcohol is removed again. That is the whole difference from grape juice, which has never fermented.
There are three techniques used for this in winemaking. Vacuum distillation lowers the pressure so that the alcohol evaporates at a low temperature. Reverse osmosis forces the wine through a membrane that lets alcohol and water through but holds back colour and flavour compounds. The spinning cone column runs the wine as a thin film over rapidly rotating cones, first captures the aromas, then removes the alcohol and returns the aromas at the end.
We have not found a source stating which of those three is used for L’OIE. As soon as the supplier confirms it to us, we will add it.
The difference from grape juice: this wine has actually fermented.
What is actually on a label like that?
Alcohol free, 0°, non-alcoholic, dealcoholised: it all stands for the same thing. Wine was made and then the alcohol was removed. In the European wine rules that is a category of its own, with a limit of 0.5 percent alcohol. Anything below that may be called dealcoholised.
If it contains more than 0.5 percent, but less than the regular version of the same wine, it is partially de-alcoholised. That is a different category, and you will therefore see it on a separate shelf.
This is how to explain the two figures you come across: 0.5 percent is the upper limit of the rule, 0.0 percent is what a producer puts on the bottle when it stays well below that.

Frequently asked questions about L’OIE
Which L’OIE does ’t Bockje have in stock?
Three bottles, all available immediately: L’OIE 0° Blanc, L’OIE 0° Rosé Merlot/Cabernet and L’OIE 0° Rouge Merlot. All three 75 centilitres.
What does the 0° on the label mean?
That is the French way of writing the alcohol percentage. In the label information in our online shop, the same is listed as 0 percent volume.
Is alcohol-free wine the same as grape juice?
No. Grape juice has never fermented. With dealcoholised wine, real wine with alcohol is made first, and the alcohol is then removed.
Which grapes are these wines made from?
The rosé is made from merlot and cabernet, the rouge from merlot. For the blanc, the label line in our webshop does not state a grape.
Why does a bottle sometimes say 0.0 percent and sometimes 0.5 percent?
0.5 percent is the upper limit that European rules set for dealcoholised wine. Producers who stay well below it put 0.0 percent on the label.
