The alcohol-free fruit beer, in the large bottle
This page is only about the Liefmans without alcohol. The regular Liefmans beers are on our beer shelf; they are not covered here.
What we have on the alcohol-free shelf is the Fruitesse On The Rocks 0.0%, in a 50 centilitre bottle. That is a more generous bottle than the 33 centilitre bottles most alcohol-free beer comes in, so it gives more than one glass.
Liefmans comes from Oudenaarde in East Flanders and has been part of the Duvel Moortgat group since 2008. On The Rocks is the name the brewery gives to this line: it prescribes serving the beer with plenty of ice.
About Liefmans
Liefmans is a Belgian brewery from Oudenaarde, founded in 1679. The brewery has traditionally been known for oud bruin, with Goudenband as its best-known name. After a bankruptcy in 2008 Liefmans was taken over by Duvel Moortgat, which has released the beers ever since.
Besides oud bruin, Liefmans makes fruit beers. An alcohol-free line has also grown out of that tradition. Liefmans Fruitesse 0.0 is a sparkling aperitif beer of 0.0 per cent with the taste of red fruit, bottled in 25 centilitre bottles.
Fruitesse 0.0 contains 15 per cent fruit: cherries, raspberries, blueberries, elderberries and strawberries. The base is barley malt, supplemented with hops; the beer therefore contains gluten from barley.
Liefmans also releases the On The Rocks line, a fruity aperitif beer intended to be served over ice. Alcohol-free versions of 0.0 per cent exist of that too.

Liefmans belongs to Oudenaarde, the region of oud bruin. Since 2008 the brewery has been part of Duvel Moortgat, the same group as Duvel in Puurs, Achouffe in the Ardennes and De Koninck in Antwerpen.
The On The Rocks line is the fruity side of the house. Alongside the regular version, the brewery's range includes an alcohol-free Fruitesse and an alcohol-free Peach. What we have in Bathmen is the Fruitesse 0.0 in the 50 centilitre bottle.
The name is also a serving instruction. The brewery itself states that you serve this beer on the rocks, i.e. with plenty of ice cubes in the glass.
What exactly does 0.0 mean?
0.0 is not a legal category. It is a label the brewer puts on the bottle itself. The law works with two other terms.
Under the Warenwetbesluit gereserveerde aanduidingen, beer may be called alcohol-free at no more than 0.1 per cent alcohol. If it contains more, up to and including 1.2 per cent, it is called low-alcohol. That is why an alcohol-free shelf also holds bottles of 0.3 or 0.4 per cent: by Dutch standards these are low-alcohol, even if the brewer calls them alcohol-free.
The Alcohol Act draws a third line: only from 0.5 per cent does a drink count as an alcoholic beverage, measured at 20 degrees.
This bottle says 0.0. If you are unsure about a bottle on our shelf, just ask; we will read the label with you.
