About the brand

From the abbey near Dinant to a bottle without alcohol

  • The brand in four facts
  • 1240The year Leffe gives as the starting point of its brewing tradition.
  • DinantThe region where the Leffe abbey is located.
  • 2018Leffe Blond 0.0% is launched.
  • 2020Leffe Bruin 0.0% follows in June.

Leffe is an abbey beer. The name comes from the abbey of Leffe near Dinant, in the Belgian Ardennes; the brand gives 1240 as the year in which the canons began brewing. Today Leffe is a brand of AB InBev.

The alcohol-free line came much later. Leffe Blond 0.0% was launched in November 2018, making it the first fully alcohol-free abbey beer. In June 2020 Leffe Bruin 0.0% followed, the second beer without alcohol under this name.

We currently have the brown one. It is the same style as the regular Leffe Bruin (a dubbel), but with 0.0 percent on the label.

0.0 percent, alcohol-free, low-alcohol: where do the limits lie?

0.0 on a label is not a legal category. It is a designation that the brewery chooses itself. The law uses two other words.

Alcohol-free beer may contain at most 0.1 percent alcohol under the Dutch Warenwetbesluit on reserved designations. Low-alcohol beer sits above that: more than 0.1 percent and at most 1.2 percent.

The Dutch Alcohol Act also draws its own line. There, a drink only counts as an alcoholic beverage from 0.5 percent alcohol, measured at 20 degrees. A beer of 0.3 or 0.4 percent is therefore not an alcoholic beverage, but here it is called low-alcohol and not alcohol-free.

Leffe Bruin 0.0 is at 0.0 percent and is therefore below 0.1 percent: alcohol-free within the meaning of the Dutch Commodities Act.
