An alcohol-free rosé from a German wine house
Rosé is underrepresented on the alcohol-free shelf: there is often white and sometimes red, but rarely a rosé. This one is there.
Light Live is a brand of Schloss Wachenheim, a German wine house that is also behind Eisberg. The label line gives Germany as the country, 75 centilitres and 0 percent alcohol.
The label line for this bottle reveals nothing more; the grape is not stated. We do not fill that in ourselves and are checking with the supplier.

Alcohol-free wine is not grape juice
- This bottle in four facts
- Schloss WachenheimThe German wine house the brand belongs to.
- GermanyThe country on the label entry.
- 75 clThe bottle size.
- 0%The alcohol percentage on the label line.
The difference between grape juice and alcohol-free wine lies in the fermentation. Grape juice is pressed and then held back: no yeast is involved, so alcohol never forms. Alcohol-free wine does go through fermentation and only afterwards has its alcohol removed.
This removal is done in winemaking in three ways. With vacuum distillation the pressure is lowered so that alcohol evaporates at a low temperature instead of at 78 degrees. With reverse osmosis the wine is pressed under pressure through a membrane that lets alcohol and water through but holds back colour, sugar and flavour compounds. With the spinning cone column the wine runs as a thin film over rapidly rotating cones: first the aromas are captured, then the alcohol, and at the end the aromas are returned.
Schloss Wachenheim speaks of gentle dealcoholisation, without naming the technique. We leave it at that until the supplier tells us more.
Grape juice has never fermented. Non-alcoholic wine has.
What does 0.0 percent on the label mean?
Dealcoholised wine is a category of its own in the European wine rules, with a ceiling of 0.5 percent alcohol. Everything below that falls under it. If it contains more, but less than the regular version of the same wine, it is called partially dealcoholised.
That is why you will find both 0.0 and 0.5 percent on the shelf. The first figure means the producer stays well below the ceiling, the second that it comes closer to it. This bottle says 0 percent.
If you want to be sure what is on the bottle itself, give us a call. We will take it from the shelf and read it out.

Is alcohol-free wine the same as grape juice?
No. Grape juice has never fermented. Non-alcoholic wine is first made as real wine, and the alcohol is removed afterwards.
How is the alcohol removed?
In winemaking by vacuum distillation, reverse osmosis or a spinning cone column. Schloss Wachenheim speaks of gentle dealcoholisation without naming the technique.
Which grape is this rosé made from?

Why does it say 0.0 percent?
Because the producer stays well below the legal ceiling of 0.5 percent for dealcoholised wine.
