The grape is indeed on it
On many alcohol-free wines the label only says white, rosé or red. On this one the grape is stated too: sauvignon blanc. That is useful information, because the grape determines where the wine comes from and roughly what you will get in the glass.
Sauvignon blanc is a white grape widely planted in France, New Zealand, Chile and Germany. For this bottle, the label line gives Germany as the country of origin.
Otherwise the label keeps it short: 75 centilitres and 0 percent alcohol. The region is not stated; we are checking that with the supplier.

What happens to the grape before it ends up in the bottle
- This bottle in four facts
- Sauvignon blancThe grape on the label line.
- GermanyThe country on the label entry.
- 75 clThe bottle size.
- 0%The alcohol percentage on the label line.
This bottle starts out as ordinary wine. Sauvignon blanc is harvested, pressed and fermented; yeast converts the sugar from the grape into alcohol. Without that step it is not wine but juice.
Then the alcohol is removed. In winemaking there are three techniques for this. Vacuum distillation lowers the pressure in the tank, so that the alcohol evaporates at a low temperature instead of at 78 degrees. Reverse osmosis forces the wine under pressure through a membrane that lets alcohol and water through but holds back colour, sugar and flavour compounds. The spinning cone column runs the wine as a thin film over rapidly rotating cones, captures the volatile aromas separately first and returns them at the end.
We have not found a source stating which of those three was used here. We therefore stick to what is on the label line.
The grape does not disappear with the alcohol.
What does 0.0 percent on the label mean?
In the European wine rules, dealcoholised wine is a category of its own, with a ceiling of 0.5 percent alcohol. Everything below that falls under it. If it contains more, but less than the regular version of the same wine, it is called partially dealcoholised.
This explains the two figures you see on the shelf. 0.5 percent is the upper limit of the rule; a producer puts 0.0 percent on the bottle if it stays well below that. This bottle says 0 percent.
Call us if you would like to know exactly what is on the bottle itself. We take it off the shelf and read it out to you.
