Why is a stout so dark?

- blond1 beer from this brewery
- IPA1 beer from this brewery
- porter1 beer from this brewery
Because of roasted malt. As with coffee beans, the roasting determines the colour and the flavour: the longer, the darker and the more notes of coffee, chocolate and sometimes a burnt edge.
So a stout does not have to be heavy. There are stouts of four percent that are easy to drink, and imperial stouts of ten percent that you pour in small glasses.
Do not serve a stout ice-cold but at around ten degrees, otherwise you mainly taste the cold and hardly any chocolate.
Dark beer is not necessarily strong beer. The colour comes from the roasting, not from the alcohol content.
